What Is a Contemporary Service? A contemporary worship service has the same elements as a traditional service including—(1) offering praise to God through music and singing, (2) listening to God’s Word and a message by the pastor, (3) sharing a time of prayer, and (4) partaking in confession and Holy Communion regularly. The basic differences between a contemporary service and a traditional service are the style of music, type of instruments used, and how the music is led. Traditional services use primarily organ and some piano. Contemporary services generally utilize guitars, drums and keyboard. The style of music is “modern” which can be appealing to all ages, but is particular attractive to youth and to those people who have not experienced growing up in a traditional church setting. |
